Physics
I'm a Royal Society University Research Fellow based in the Particle Physics group at the University of Manchester, where I hold a chair in Particle Physics.
I work on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva.
My main research interest is the FP420 R&D project, aimed at upgrading ATLAS and CMS with forward proton detectors 420m away from the interaction points. In the past, I worked at the H1 experiment at DESY in Hamburg, and the D0 experiment at the Tevatron at Fermilab, Chicago.
My complete list of published papers, outside H1, D0 and ATLAS, can be found here.
The Manchester forward physics conference web page is here.
If you know what POMWIG means, and want to use it, then go here.
The KT++ project homepage is here.
I completed my thesis in 1998 on diffraction at large momentum transfer at the H1 experiment at HERA in Hamburg.
Other Things
Visit my site CERN Podcast to learn more about the work being done at CERN.
As well as my proper job, I also work in TV and radio. If you want me for that, please go to the Media Information page.
I recently worked as the scientific consultant for a film called Sunshine, written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle. My commentary on the film is now available on the DVD. I write on scientific issues in the popular press, the most recent credits include the New Statesman and The Times. I regularly give public understanding of science talks at schools, science festivals and conferences, most recently at TED 2008. My TED talk is available here. You can also watch a video of my talk at LIFT07 here.
I've had other jobs too ... I was a musician for quite a while. Here is a video of a gig I played in 1989 with my first proper band, Dare.
I was elected a fellow of The Explorers Club in 2002.
